Role Description:
Hensman Street Elementary is a small school with a big heart. We support some of the most vulnerable children and families in our community through a trauma-informed, multi-age model that puts every child at the centre. As a Board Member, you''d help shape the strategic direction of a school that''s genuinely changing outcomes for the kids who need it most.
This is a meaningful way to contribute your skills and judgement to your local community, collaborate with a committed group of professionals and build real experience in not-for-profit governance.
What you''ll gain:
• Genuine board-level strategic and governance experience, valuable for your CV or future board roles
• Mentorship and support from our Chair, Vice-Chair and Principal
• A close-up view of how a small, values-led school operates
• The chance to shape outcomes for a community that needs strong, thoughtful governance
Duties include:
• Attend and actively participate in Board meetings and the AGM
• Prepare for meetings by reviewing agendas and supporting documents
• Respond in a timely manner when input or feedback is requested
• Contribute ideas, insights and constructive discussion to support the School''s strategic direction
• Exercise your vote as part of Board decision-making
• Act in the best interests of the School and its community
• Support and promote the work of the School within the community where appropriate
The School Board meets for approximately 90 minutes, eight times per year (twice per school term), usually on a Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. While onsite attendance meetings are preferred, options to join virtually via Teams can be arranged.
How to Apply:
If you are passionate about education and community outcomes, enjoy strategic thinking, and are keen to contribute your skills and ideas, we\'d love to hear from you. We\'re looking for collaborative, organised people with strong communication skills, sound judgement and attention to detail. Connections to community networks are welcome but not essential. Board experience is an advantage but not required, and we especially welcome applications from people with backgrounds in finance, law, marketing, property or other fields that can strengthen the Board\'s collective expertise.
To apply, please send your current CV and a short cover letter outlining your interest in the role and what you would bring to the Board. If you\'d like to find out more or explore whether the role is right for you, we\'d be delighted to hear from you at board@hensmanstreet.wa.edu.au.
