Role Description:
The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC), the controlling body of football in Western Australia, is seeking expressions of interest from persons wishing to be considered for appointment as a Commissioner. The role of the Commission is to oversee the promotion, development and management of football throughout the State and provide guidance, planning and leadership to all levels of the game.
The WAFC is entering an exciting period as it shapes the future of football in Western Australia. In 2017, the WAFC released its 5-year Strategic Plan for WA Football, which sets out our approach for one of the biggest periods of reform for football in this state. Current projects include preparing for the design and construction of the new home of football in WA in the Subiaco Oval precinct.
We are seeking a diversified representation of Commissioners, by reference to gender, age, culture, background, ethnicity, who can assist in leading both the WAFC and the WA football industry through an exciting period of transformation, support the good governance and accountability of our organisation, and foster strong relations across all stakeholders to our game.
Experience and exposure to community sport, not just football, will be highly regarded. A level of participation and engagement is required with stakeholders as well as the ability to contribute actively at board level with independence and objectivity. Completion of the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Governance course is a desirable qualification.
There are three positions to be filled, two of which relate to Commissioners who will retire by rotation and are eligible to stand again so will be seeking reappointment. Two appointments will be effective for 3-year terms from 1.1.20 to 1.1.23 and one will be for a 1-year term from 1.1.20 to 1.1.21. The position of Commissioner is not remunerated.
The Commission is a not-for-profit sports association established in 1989 and is responsible for the overall development and strategic direction of football in Western Australia. The Commission owns the West Coast Eagles FC and Fremantle Dockers FC as wholly-owned subsidiaries and oversees the operations of the WAFL, junior and senior community football, umpiring and development.
As the Commission strives to be as diverse as the communities we represent we actively encourage applications from women, indigenous and multicultural candidates.
